How to make a non woven tote bag at home?

Aug 22, 2025

Making a non woven tote bag at home can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. Not only does it allow you to create a unique and personalized accessory, but it also gives you the satisfaction of knowing you've crafted something with your own hands. As a non woven tote bag supplier, I'm excited to share with you a step-by-step guide on how to make your own non woven tote bag at home.

Materials You'll Need

  • Non woven fabric: You can purchase non woven fabric from a craft store or online. Choose a color and pattern that you like.
  • Scissors: A good pair of sharp scissors is essential for cutting the fabric.
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread: If you have a sewing machine, it will make the process faster and more efficient. However, you can also sew the bag by hand using a needle and thread.
  • Measuring tape: To ensure accurate measurements, use a measuring tape to measure the fabric.
  • Pins: Pins are useful for holding the fabric in place while you sew.
  • Iron: An iron can help to press the seams and give the bag a professional finish.

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Fabric

The first step in making a non woven tote bag is to measure and cut the fabric. You will need two rectangular pieces of fabric for the front and back of the bag, and two long strips of fabric for the handles.

  • Bag body: Measure and cut two rectangles of non woven fabric that are the same size. The size of the rectangles will depend on how big you want your tote bag to be. A common size for a tote bag is about 14 inches wide by 16 inches tall.
  • Handles: Measure and cut two long strips of non woven fabric for the handles. The strips should be about 2 inches wide and 24 inches long. You can adjust the length of the handles depending on how long you want them to be.

Step 2: Fold and Sew the Handles

Once you have cut the handles, you need to fold and sew them.

  • Fold the handles: Fold each strip of fabric in half lengthwise, with the right sides together. Then, press the fold with an iron to create a crease.
  • Sew the handles: Use a sewing machine or needle and thread to sew along the open edge of the folded strip, leaving about 1/4 inch seam allowance. Turn the handles right side out and press them again with an iron.

Step 3: Pin the Handles to the Bag

Next, you need to pin the handles to the bag.

  • Position the handles: Place the handles on the right side of one of the rectangular pieces of fabric, about 2 inches from the top edge and centered on the width of the fabric. Pin the handles in place.
  • Pin the other side: Place the other rectangular piece of fabric on top of the first piece, with the right sides together. Make sure the handles are sandwiched between the two pieces of fabric. Pin the two pieces of fabric together along the edges.

Step 4: Sew the Bag

Now it's time to sew the bag together.

  • Sew the sides: Use a sewing machine or needle and thread to sew along the sides and bottom of the bag, leaving about 1/4 inch seam allowance. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam to secure the stitches.
  • Turn the bag right side out: Once you have sewn the sides and bottom of the bag, turn the bag right side out through the opening at the top.

Step 5: Finish the Bag

The final step in making a non woven tote bag is to finish the bag.

  • Press the seams: Use an iron to press the seams of the bag to give it a professional finish.
  • Close the opening: If you want to close the opening at the top of the bag, you can sew a simple hem or add a drawstring. To sew a hem, fold the top edge of the bag down about 1/2 inch and press it with an iron. Then, sew along the folded edge to secure the hem. To add a drawstring, cut a piece of cord or ribbon that is about 30 inches long. Make a small slit on each side of the top edge of the bag, about 1 inch from the corner. Thread the drawstring through the slits and tie a knot at each end.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use a rotary cutter: If you have a rotary cutter, it can make cutting the non woven fabric much easier and more precise.
  • Add pockets: You can add pockets to your tote bag by cutting a smaller rectangle of fabric and sewing it to the front of the bag.
  • Use interfacing: If you want your tote bag to be more sturdy, you can use interfacing to reinforce the fabric. Interfacing is a thin layer of fabric that is fused to the wrong side of the main fabric to give it more structure.
  • Experiment with different fabrics and colors: Non woven fabric comes in a variety of colors and patterns, so don't be afraid to experiment and create a unique tote bag that reflects your personal style.
